2026 Global Tropical Cyclone Discussion

CSU has East PAC ACE at 343.6 and West PAC ACE at 336.5. Catching up to each other

This one will be interesting to watch as far as its eventual track. The Euro and GFS keeps this thing moving pretty much straight on into Taiwan and China, whereas Google and Euro's AI model both have Champi curving before Taiwan and heading to Japan.

The physics models ain't dead yet! A.I. models badly missed the path on this one.

It's almost as if this stuff isn't easy :D

I still hardly ever use the AI models unless: 1. they agree with the operational models or their ensembles, 2. for tropical features

Hurricane Vance became the record tying 11th major hurricane of the 2026 Pacific Hurricane Season, tying 2015. Vance also pushed an already record breaking ACE to above 350 units now.

Other than the 20/30 AOI just west of the IDL, expected to move E or NE and cross the IDL into the CPAC, the models don’t really have anything for EPAC or CPAC after that.

After what is currently Tropical Storm Champi (former STY) and Severe Tropical Storm In-fa (expected to become a powerful typhoon), models are mostly silent for the WPAC as well.

it was about time we get a break. We have just had non-stop activity since mid-september. lol

Scratch that, we have Tropical Depression Three-C that newly formed recently, but after 03C, we should quiet down.

Though the 00Z Oct 23 and 00Z Oct 24 GEFS runs seem to be hinting at the possibility of more TC activity in the CPAC heading into late November, though it’s a very long way out, so I’m just eyeing it for right now because it does fit with the Super El Niño pattern.

EPAC wise, that same model doesn’t really have too much though the entire 840 hour run. We could get Winnie, but we’ll see.

Fun fact: Winnie has only been used once in the EPAC, in 1983, which was 43 years ago.

In-fa has also become a typhoon, and it could get near super typhoon intensity within the current forecast period of the current warning from the JTWC

So I have a question. If, by chance, TD Three-C becomes a tropical storm, what name will it use? Since all the Central Pacific names have been used up.

The CPAC names actually haven’t been used up

The names in the CPAC go on without regards to the year, which is why for an example Hone was the next name on the CPAC list from 2019 until it was finally used in 2024.

But to answer your question, the next name in the CPAC is Olana

Ah okay. I just got confused since Wikipedia only lists 3 names for the Central Pac.

18Z ATCF upgraded Tropical Depression Three-C to Tropical Storm Olana, so yeah.

It’s just a thing that the wiki has adopted over the past few years.

I just saw that on tropicaltidbits. I'm planning on making a master spreadsheet list of every tropical cyclone over each basin including the South Atlantic as well. Might even include Medicanes too once I get a few bigger projects done and updated.

South Atlantic’s gonna be a hard one, because while several have been documented, many haven’t been documented.

Some of the ones I know are documented are Caterina, Arani, Anita, Cari, Akara, Iba and a few others
