Severe WX Severe Weather Thread - 6/15/26 - 6/18/26

Yes, when I think of windrowing, what the 1991 Andover tornado did is what it actually should look like.
It’s easy to tell that the debris from these homes weren’t just blown down wind, instead, were physically churned into pieces and subsequently striated around the tornado’s core into a clean streaky pattern.

Yup! Vilonia and Bremen are also good examples

And that tree damage in the third photo doesn’t look any stronger than low end ef2 at best.
I wasn't trying to imply that the tree damage was anything higher than EF2. I'm no expert and have never claimed to be and usually steer clear from damage discussion for that exact reason. Maybe "gnarly" wasn't the best way to describe it.

Any of the experts want to chime in? To my eye, that looks like some of the most impressive tree damage in a forested area that I’ve seen in a while.

This looks comparable, to me, to the high-end, violent tornadoes that occurred near the Columbus, MS radar on April 13, 2019 that Tony Lyza documented and wrote a paper about. Those tornadoes should have earned at least an EF-4 rating.

We’ve seen EF-3 ratings for similar deforestation before, but I would think this at least gets a look at a violent rating.

Been rated Ef2.

Also speaking of tree damage, the early morning Piketon, OH tornado caused some pretty significant deforestation of hillsides. This happened well after the main portion of the outbreak had wound down.

How is NWS Indianapolis as a surveying office? Are they more conservative or liberal with ratings?
Conservative to borderline negligent. They missed a small house slabbed by the Linton “EF2” last year, and attributed EF4 tree damage from the 2023 Stinesville tornado to some kind of geographic enhancement.
Boxcars, not ultra heavy tanker cars here. No lofting. Not an Enderlin type situation here by any stretch.

Thanks and yeah I remember the Linton Bs** survey.

It sounds like this survey hasn't been completed yet but I'm not optimistic about an upgrade. They found widespread deforestation with some debarking along Buskirk Road, plus some of the aerial photos show some isolated areas with massive blowdowns with essentially no trunks left standing. Sure I've seen crazier forest damage, but it is enough for EF3.

This Stinesville tornado, along with the Linton and Nashville IN tornadoes last year on 5/16, were all easily into the EF3 range if NWS IND used anything resembling reasonable assessment of tree damage. Getting pretty sick of this.

It's noteworthy to note that I'm pretty sure all of these tornadoes exhibited at least some form of a reflectivity debris ball. Linton probably deserved EF3-EF4, not sure if Nashville did anything to structures, anyone got information on that? With Stinesville, that was quite the absurd presentation on radar.
