Strange decision to maintain 130 knots for sure. Satellite presentation easily supported 160 knots at peak

The 00Z time was apparently overridden to 145 kts, so while they realized their mistake and updated it to a Category 5 STY, the intensity is still too low in my opinionStrange decision to maintain 130 knots for sure. Satellite presentation easily supported 160 knots at peak
They have a bad habit of doing this with high-end storms, really wish we had recon in the WPAC.The 00Z time was apparently overridden to 145 kts, so while they realized their mistake and updated it to a Category 5 STY, the intensity is still too low in my opinion
I wish we had recon in the WPAC too, but unfortunately it ended in 1987, and obviously hasn’t started back up since. They have a bad habit of doing this with high-end storms, really wish we had recon in the WPAC.
I have argued about this the last few years. I get satellites have been upgraded the last few years plus are better compared to years ago but they can only do so much with intensity. I mean obviously you couldn't fly into every single storm unless you had a designated fleet of unmanned drones each year. I have also argued that the pressure of 870mb from Tip has been broken multiple times since then. By Patricia, Haiyan, Goni. Just to name a few.I wish we had recon in the WPAC too, but unfortunately it ended in 1987, and obviously hasn’t started back up since.
I could definitely say Patricia broke it given its peak was 872 mb, however with Haiyan, its pressure may be higher because of it low latitude plus the background pressure state.I have argued about this the last few years. Goni was likely sub-890 mb. Not sure it went sub-880 tho.I could definitely say Patricia broke it given its peak was 872 mb, however with Haiyan, its pressure may be higher because of it low latitude plus the background pressure state.
Maybe Goni got that far, I’m not sure; but I would lean 50/50 on it
I’d throw Surigae into the potential 870 mb breakers conversation as well.I have argued about this the last few years.
