Severe Threat May 15-16, 2025

This scale is a joke

Wait wait wait now hold on a minute. See this? That’s a basement window. Do you know what that means?

That means what we thought was a poured slab foundation was not. It was a subfloor over the basement. I’m usually good at spotting the difference, but this one slipped past me.

What this means is this was potentially what I call a “subfloor slider”. High-end EF3 might be totally appropriate.

You all need to slow down, take a detailed objective look at the photos, and analyze the construction and its implications instead of immediately jumping to the “Everything is broken!!!111!1” mantra. It’s getting ridiculous.

You don't need EF-4's to have a bad day. Even just EF-1s and -2s can ruin your day.
We had an EF2 hit nearby in 2011 (not during the superoutbreak). Tornadoes are a bit uncommon here, but not unheard of, and yet I remember seeing plenty of stuff marking the 14th anniversary this year. Nobody died but a whole bunch of people were missing part or all of their roofs among other things.

As I said, just get used to what is now the unbreakable 165 ceiling, and the ratings process is a lot less irritating lol

Am more interested in seeing path lengths at this point, wondering how many families we had since it really feels like some of these cycled decently quickly? The southern KY one was probably a very long tracker though

Yea, I'm interested in seeing the width of that Somerset tornado.

There’s nothing even controversial here though. Subfloor. High-end EF3 for a house becoming detached from its subfloor could even be considered a bit liberal for a rating. Come on guys we know better…

Well yeah that one house is fine as a 3, I'm speaking more generally for outbreaks as a whole with our collection of 165s getting quite impressive

re: Marion
This was one of the bad DIs from the drone footage I was able to match up with a before photo
I see what your saying but I do not see any basement on this house that was almost completely slabbed. Maybe I am overlooking it.

Edit...Nevermind I think it is under the subfloor as you said.

That’s what you think. What you don’t understand though is that this house isn’t no ordinary house….. this is the most well built house in existence, and to be able to destroy it has got to take an incredible brute of a tornado. So basically I think we have an EF8 on our hands right now.

( This is a joke. I am not being serious. )

In all seriousness, yeah. Some of y’all need to analyze and take the time to really look at what is being shown in damage photos.

Good catch. Quick question - and pardon my ignorance -what is the difference between this home with a basement (ignoring the possible CMU foundation) and some of the homes in Parkersburg that had basements?
