Severe Threat May 15-16, 2025

Here's your reason why the tornado/supercell has lasted so long. It's riding along a boundary. You can tell there's one situated across Southern Kentucky down into Northern Tennessee.

As @JPWX said, these storms could become problematic as they move east. They should eventually grow upscale into a QLCS. There's still a lot of instability out ahead of this cluster. In the meantime, watching that eastern KY storm in horror like everyone else.

I’ll be honest, and there likely have been injuries with this tornado, but “declaring a mass casualty event” is overused because we don’t know what it means for them. Weather twitter just runs with it thinking the worst. A mass casualty, or even mass fatality, event will be drastically different for every county. There are counties in Georgia where a car accident with 5 patients requiring transport would be a mass casualty event.

MCIs can also be declared as a precaution, in expectation of a large influx of patients with critical injuries, even if there's no confirmed knowledge of how many or how severe the injuries may be. This can be an especially important decision in smaller hospitals.

Little Rock 2023 was declared a mass casualty event and no fatalities occurred. IIRC mass casualty event just means many injuries and/or fatalities may have occurred. It also means there's a chance that very few have actually occurred.
