Just noticed that John Philip Sousa has a little over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. That's pretty damn good for a guy who was most popular in the 1890's and died in 1932.

Man, I don't really listen to country anymore, but George Strait used to be my jam. When I was in like.. 7th or 8th grade? I learned how to play Carrying Your Love With Me on guitar because apparently I thought it'd be a good idea to serenade the girl I had a crush on. You have no idea how happy I am that this was before social media really exploded lol
Definitely not a big country music fan either, mainly because almost every country song made after the 1990's is pure dogsh!t... literally every single country song these days is about drinkin' lotsa beer, drivin' big @ss lifted pickup trucks and "country girls". Songs like "Cruise" by Florida-Georgia line are the literal epitome of everything that's gone wrong with the genre lol
Of course, country used to have people like George Strait and Charlie Daniels at the helm, and that's when it was actually good.

Or going back even further with Hank Snow, Jim Reeves, and of course Johnny Cash among others. Country had it's own identity back then.
About 1980 I remember my brother telling me that country music followed the trends of rock and pop, but was several years behind. I think he was right. There's nothing new or innovative about country anymore. The only thing constant is cowboy boots and hats and even that's changing.
The Buggles had it right on the first MTV vid; it's all about image now with the music not much mattering anymore

Pop Music used to be all fun and lighthearted, now it’s angry and depressing. As far as country music, I prefer that music from the era when Hee Haw was on TV. I can’t picture Jelly Roll being on Hee Haw.

Country music has always been dumb to me, it's fanbase in particular are what really ruin it for me. So many ignorant backwards folks clinging to music that celebrates being ignorant and bigoted.

Maybe some songs that would be hard to believe or bad advice if you took the lyrics literally….
I’ve actually seen this done a few places in the past, and it can be pretty fun/funny.
Much of today’s country is generic pop crap, but it sounds more like you stumbled across some Johnny Rebel music rather than country music.

If 'ya wanna talk controversial music, I one day accidentally stumbled across this band called Rebel Son. This song is, uh, one of the tamer ones they've released...

Not exactly what you might think of as "rebel music" but Link Wray from Dunn NC did his own thing when he found Rockabilliy and Country too tame and Rock and Roll really hadn't been clearly defined. He's mentioned by many early rock musicians as an influence on their music and even as an inspiration. While Dick Dale was putting the hardness in rock on the west coast, Link Wray was the East coasts bad boy.
