Thought a thread should be started about the possible southern winter storm towards late week. Although ground zero appears to be Tennessee, parts of north Alabama could see snow, sleet and freezing rain on Thursday that won’t quickly melt on Friday thanks to lingering attic air.

Confidence is increasing on more snow Thursday.

Models still differ slightly regarding the track of the sfc low as it
moves to our south, and this has big implications on the short term
forecast. Consensus is that the sfc front will stall somewhere across
the forecast area, thus a thermal gradient between sub-freezing and
above freezing temperatures will largely dictate precip type. Models
continue to indicate that sub-freezing temperatures will make it at
least to the Tennessee/Alabama state line, leading to some form of
wintry precipitation Thursday morning. Another item of low confidence
is the start time of the precip Thursday morning, with the GFS being
slightly faster than the Euro and the NAM. Looking at wet-bulb temps,
sub-freezing temperature columns look fairly promising north of the
AL/TN state line throughout the event on Thursday, and looks to be
primarily a snow event for that portion of the forecast region. A
quick 1-2" of snow could cause hazardous travel conditions by
reducing visibilities and causing roadways to become slick.
While
confidence in impacts is fairly low, believe the best chance for
travel impacts Thursday will be along and north of the TN/AL state
line.

Meanwhile we're looking at another 2" or so on Thursday night. It's supposed to be 44 today, so hopefully a lot of what's already here will melt before then.

Not me. Stay cold for awhile and snow 3 or 4 more times.

I wish the heat worked in my truck though.

Lurking for years....first post. The NWS briefing has handcuffed may school systems. My thoughts...In the Decatur area, we probably will not see any freezing rain until after subfreezing temps arrive late afternoon. However, based upon the briefing, may school systems will hold remote / virtual day tomorrow that more than likely run into Friday. UGH!

NWS Huntsville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory.
And now so has Baltimore/Washington. WWA twins!

Thankfully nothing on the scale of the other day, hopefully they're better prepared this time. I've been terrified to go outside since Monday morning because this time last year I was about to have surgery to fix a broken fibula courtesy of an icy sidewalk...

And it'll be the same parents who would be angry if the kids went to school but had to be sent home when the snow started. :D:D
Ah, yes. As a teacher, I know these parents all too well. Nothing like being chewed out by parent who is mad because they have to spend time with their kid.

Yep. Just saw a picture from Spring Hill, south of Nashville and the ground was white within 30 minutes.

I use the Wundermap to see local weather station temps, dew points etc, and temps in North Alabama seem to be dropping a little faster than I expected.

On a side note, is there a better site to see info like that?
