Ah yes. OTD 63 years ago was the Rochester tornado mentioned, and OTD 40 years ago the depression that would become Hurricane Gloria formed.

Dan Robinson's video of Crosstown 2006 is pretty intense. It starts out with fairly poor contrast but around the 1:20 mark the tornado becomes more defined and you realize just how big it is.
In roughly the same area as Tri-State (it almost hit Murphysboro, IL as well) and depending on which account you believe, may have visually resembled it, as well. This was a challenging chase in the winding roads of the Mid-MS Valley south of St. Louis, and he was one of the few chasers who came away with clear imagery of it.

OTD 40 years ago, Gloria became a major hurricane.

...and, OTD 40 years ago, it reached peak intensity: 145 mph and 919 millibars. It's IMO one of the many Atlantic C5 candidates of the 80s and 90s.
