Significant Tornado Events - Global Edition

New video of the strong wedge tornado that struck between two towns in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, on the afternoon of 07/31, it took less than 4 minutes to develop into an imposing wedge. At the end, it looks as if the entire clockwise mesocyclone is touching down!

In these posts on Severe Weather 2026, I discuss the meteorological background and about this tornado in more details:

Does anyone have a good list of tornadoes in South America this year? It feels like every other day I see a grinder out of Brazil or Argentina.
Unfortunately, Brazil’s meteorological services are still pretty weak when it comes to severe weather, as we don’t really have a dedicated national service or specialized center focused on severe storms, so most of the work on documenting and studying these events ends up being done by researchers at universities, with some events also being investigated by Civil Defense and state-level institutes

Right now, probably the main reference for severe weather in Brazil is PREVOTS, which is a non-profit group of meteorologists connected to universities and focused on improving severe weather forecasting, research and documentation in Brazil

They issue daily severe weather outlooks and post them here PREVOTS, and they usually also post information and reports about the events that actually occurred, so they’re probably the best source to follow if you want to keep track of severe weather in Brazil - PREVOTS.

Just to give you an idea of how active things have been, around 92 tornadoes were confirmed in Brazil in 2025, although the final assessment for that year hasn’t been completed yet, and this year we’ve already had more than 82 confirmed tornadoes, with that number likely to increase as more events are investigated and documented.

There’s also a group working on compiling all the known recorded tornadoes across South America, but the project is still in its early stages. They’re basically trying to build a more complete historical database of tornadoes across the continent. You can check it out here: Tornado Tracks – Previsão Masters

Another significant tornado occurred in Brazil late this afternoon.
At least five municipalities have reported damage: Piraí do Sul, Candói, Jaguariaíva, Castro, and Palmitópolis.
Information is still preliminary.

So far, two separate tornadoes have been confirmed. One occurred in Candoi, near Rio Bonito do Iguaçu.
The second tornado affected rural areas across three municipalities: Piraí do Sul, Jaguariaíva, and Castro.
This was the more violent of the two, although its intensity has not yet been estimated.
