Severe Weather Threat May 17-19, 2025

David R. with TX Storm Chasers is thinking the TX cell is recycling, though it is weaker than it was earlier at the moment. There's an additional complex of storms to the north of DFW around Denton, but it's not severe right now.

Important to keep in mind, the cells in KS right now are quite anemic due to mid level dry air and now a nocturnal inversion layer. In the presence of these two factors especially, a strong LLJ actually can do more harm than good for a supercell.

In a anemic supercell, the LLJ can entrain this dry air into the updraft, thinning it, which the the inversion decapitates the whole thing and the cell dries out.

Depending on whether these supercells manage to fight off this or not, an over performance can still occur. I doubt it personally, and after what happened so far with this event, definitely don’t need anymore trouble.

It’s sad that people are harping on sirens not working for that Kansas tornado. Those residents shouldn’t be relying on an outdoor warning siren. We are failing in the meteorological and emergency management communities if these are still the main source of warning consumption. They are a small tool in a large toolbox.
