Severe WX Severe Weather Threat 3/14-3/16

Yep, Saturday was a drier boundary layer and minor adjustment in trough orientation away from being a super outbreak.

But Friday also could’ve been a super outbreak just by itself if it wasn’t for the very thin parameter space and had it started in the afternoon which would’ve gave this system all day to produce at the rate that it was.
I believe the rule of thumb for consecutive outbreaks is 6 hours between confirmed tornadoes. It will be interesting to see when all surveys are complete whether this is technically one outbreak or not. If it’s a single outbreak it’s going to be pretty historic (it is anyway but you know what I mean).

Well, so far we're at 2 EF4s, 7 EF3s, and 22 EF2s. Note that a few of the EF2s have preliminary ratings of EF2+ and could be upgraded.

Missouri:
Bakersfield (EF3)
Des Arc (EF3+)
Poplar Bluff (EF3)

Arkansas:
Cave City (EF3)
Fifty-Six (EF3)
Larkin (EF4)
Diaz (EF4)

Alabama:
Plantersville (EF3)

Mississippi (and Louisiana?):
Kentwood-Tylertown (EF3+)

To my knowledge, the tornadoes in Gordo and Troy, Alabama have not been rated yet.

If my reading of the times on the Wiki article is correct, it looks like there was probably not a 6 hour gap at any point. We will see!

SO FAR, in terms of numbers of tornadoes in each category, the outbreak of November 17, 2013 (highlighted by the Washington, IL tornado) is pretty close. The April 15, 1998 outbreak is also similar. Interestingly, the tornado that hit Diaz, AR is, in its preliminary status, rated at about the same strength as the Washington, IL tornado.

Was the Bakersfield rating finalized? Thought it was preliminary as of yesterday.

Why must people say things that are NOT true? Ugh it irritates me. The fatalities from tornadoes is 23, he is including all the dust storm deaths and what not and saying it’s deadliest tornado outbreak since.. smh

I think the Gordo and Troy tornadoes are being surveyed today, so hopefully we will hear something this afternoon or evening about them.

Thanks for this. Trying to keep track of the individual tornadoes.

Here's FFC's PIS for the tornado. Winds estimated at 110 MPH, making it a high-end EF-1.
One day it's going to be "our turn" here in the Atlanta area and we won't be so relatively "lucky" compared to our Mississippi and Alabama neighbors. I hope everyone is prepared when we eventually have a strong/violent tornado hit the heart of the metro area.

With all of this discussion regarding Diaz, maybe LZK should go back and reanalyze the Vilonia tornado. Seems pretty clear to me what that thing would be rated at nowadays, not even counting all of the missing DIs.

This was not the structure that was rated 140mph.

Not shocking at all. I’ve heard Springfield is notoriously very conservative. Could have just been an oversight for now that they’ll correct or just completely ignore it. I will be really surprised to see any of the Missouri tornados in Springfield’s area get over an EF3.

John Robinson just left LZK and went North.
