The bu$t filter is super annoying and needs to go away. It completely botched Fred’s legendary post the night before the 4/27/11 super outbreak because he used the word in the post.

Not sure why it was implemented in the first place.

Yeah... as funny as the filter was at first, I honestly agree now that it's just annoying and unnecessary by this point. Filter should either be optional, much like how users can maintain lists of ignored users, or at least changed to where it only applies in active Severe WX threads.

IIRC (and someone more knowledgeable please correct me if I get anything wrong), it was implemented just ahead of the 3/14-15 outbreaks last year, when anticipation over that event was causing an influx of new members. The filter was implemented in an attempt to prevent the word from essentially being spammed in messages (particularly in the event that that then-upcoming outbreak ended up underperforming).

Thanks for the context. I mean, I get it, but if someone says “bu$t” and they’re wrong, the community can correct them.

This event could have been much more intense if it didn’t overconvect quite early on. Despite that occurring, we still got probably two (three if you include that rope in Iowa that looked strong w/o hitting structures) significant tornadoes out of it, and that’s not including the ones that aren’t documented yet, of which there surely are.

Very odd seeing people call this an underperformance or a bu$t. There were a bunch of short tornadoes and one or two signifcant+ tornadoes. What more do you want from an enhanced.
This was far from a bu$t. I honestly think everyone is still getting calibrated to the new hatched cig areas and what they actually correlate to in a real world event.

Also some outbreaks way further back would instantly get spammed with bu$t discussion when they didn't perform as expected. I think that happened with the moderate in 2024 that led to multiple ef3 tornadoes around the Fort Worth metro as the daytime event bu$ted (albeit with that stupid left split).

I'll venture to the opinion that it was never funny.
I get a kick out of it, but I'm active on Reddit where that tornado community has the word entirely blocked and gives people lifetime bans for using it. This site's approach is much better. I definitely think there are much better words you can use to describe a life threatening event underperforming or failing to verify.

not a bu$t by any means but also didn’t live up to the moderate risk hype that it was as getting here and elsewhere this morning. Also, second straight day the the SPC had a bad day forecasting the plains. I am very curious to see how the lack of substantial convection impacts tomorrows threat

The problem is some of the most violently tornadic environments are ones that are just as likely to not initiate at all. Especially in the plains. It's all dependant on the cap bursting.

I actually agree with what you say here.

Apart from the Union Center storm, I doubt we'll see any significant (EF2+) ratings from today... and even that storm was weird. Intense couplet and CC drop, but looked like a disorganized blob of convection on reflectivity.
