Severe Weather 2024

Wicked view of one of the supercells from today from Sandy Spring, MD. Between the storm structure and the violent motion on some of the tornadoes today, a pretty noteworthy event for the Delmarva area. Also curious to see what comes out of surveys of the tornadoes from MS/AL MCS event, that NW AL tornado looked fairly nasty.

Good lord

In true 2024 fashion, a few days ago Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced its strongest tornado to date. The event lasted only a couple minutes and had an impressively short path length for a significant tornado, at only half a kilometer (about 0.3 miles). The tornado destroyed the roofs of at least seven houses, including one that indicated IF2 intensity per the ESWD. This is the first tornado in Bosnia to receive a rating of F2 or higher since the country logged its first confirmed tornado in 2010.

Let's be real: If the SPC were a company, they would likely go out business after this year.
Seems like models are part of the problem (not that the public cares).

But I'm not sure why folks treat the SPC like it's a sacred cow. It's a government organization, we pay for it and we should have the right to call them out when they suck.

...lol.

The SPC may be a gov't organization but it ain't the DMV. There's a difference between forecasters making the best predictions they possibly can using forecast models, weather balloons, a network of spotters, etc. compared to workers who don't get paid enough to care about helping people renew their drivers licenses.

Strongly disagree. The people at the SPC are some of the smartest people around, and as we’ve seen so far this year, it turns out predicting tornado outbreaks is pretty damn challenging. This is a science that has to deal with one of the most challenging fields in physics as its focal point, that being hydrodynamics and fluid dynamics. Not even some of the brightest people in the world are able to understand turbulent flow very well and the whole atmosphere is dependent on this.

If people think they can conduct better forecasting and warning, then by all means, create your own forecasts. There’s nothing stopping people. They have access to the same information you do.

I strongly dislike SPC bashing for forecasts. Warnings are another thing and I can understand that to some degree, but forecast bashing is some of the most annoying and dumb things on the planet due to the sheer number of factors this field demands you pay attention to.
