A 7.0 earthquake 14 km north of the Greek Island of Samos in the Aegean Sea has caused serious damage in western Turkey, including the major city of İzmir, where a tsunami was also reported.

[Translation of the tweet in Turkish: "After the earthquake in Seferihisar, İzmir, the sea flooded. We were trapped in the upper stories. There is a lot of damage."]

Here's another video of the tsunami [Translation: "Very sad, Seferihisar was also affected by a tsunami"]. The tweet suggests that several other major cities in western Turkey, including Bursa and Eskişehir were also affected.

Wow! I've got a friend that used to live there and has friends in the region. Just reached out to her to see if they are okay.

The videos reminded me of the ones from Indonesia during the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 (not of the same size obviously).

As of right now, at least 12 dead in Turkey, 14 overall. Here's the USGS event page:

And the University of Athens earthquake list:

Nerd details should be available from local seismologists here, though today's isn't up yet (also it's in Greek, but my browser translated it all right):

The USGS has similar information, so it's possible to compare expert views.
