Music

Though many of you won't know him, legendary blues guitarist John Mayall passed away today, he was 90. About 30 years ago I had the pleasure of watching him perform in a small local venue bringing out all the soulful sounds an acoustic guitar can muster. I didn't know his age but he was a bit 'blue haired' even then.

Also, though I can't find the exact details, sometime in the last year Charlie Gearheart passed away. He was the founder of the "Goose Creek Symphony" who I also got to see once. Their sound was something 'folk' with some hillbilly hippie thrown in, starting in the late 60's and they continued gigging into this century. I've loved them since I heard them first in 75,a crazy and fun band with a sound like no other.

I'm also a fan of some 80's "New Wave" bands, with "Oingo Boingo being one of my faves. Their roots started as a SoCal street performing acting troupe about 1980 and they did a very obscure song called "The Chedderanian National Anthem", which until last week I'd only heard 3 times loooooong ago. I've searched the internet far and wide and couldn't find it anywhere till someone recently dropped an old vid of them doing it on some street of LA. Audio quality ain't good but it was great to find it's craziness again.

George Strait has released a new song called To The Moon. It is so awesome! Of course, any song from George is a hit. Crazy how back when I was young, I hated country music, but now I enjoy it. Funny how things change when you get older.

I typically roll my eyes at present country releases, but I agree George Strait did a great job with that song! Of course, anything Strait is gonna be better than most other country artists.

Yeah. Too much "rap and pop country" these days. One of my favorite songs of his is Here For A Good Time.

Ah, where's a guy like @Anti Marine Layer when you need him to tear apart a music video with satanic imagery?

But seriously though, even ignoring the pentagrams on Doja Cat's arm, this song is one of the worst things I have ever heard in my life.

In 2007, the Enhanced Fujita Scale was introduced in the United States to replace the original Fujita scale.

It's now 2025, so get ready for... the Enhanced Subjective Song Analysis Index, or ESSAI!

Dumpster fire (0) - Songs that are so bad, they are unrateable unless you want a negative score. They don't really qualify as music at all, and thus shouldn't even be on the scale, but here they are.
Dumpster (1-9) - Songs that just barely qualify as music, and thus belong in the dumpster.
Trash can (10-19) - SLIGHTLY better than the previous tier, but not by much.
Rusty barrel (20-29) - Not very good at all, but tends to have at least one redeeming quality.
Tin can (30-49) - Songs that are debatably bad. Somewhat listenable, and not scraping the bottom of the barrel, but not good either.
White square (50-59) - Songs that are very average, not good but not bad.
Silver star (60-79) - Songs that are good, pretty decent but maybe not great.
Gold star (80-89) - Songs that are great with very little bad. Can't go wrong with songs on this tier, even if they fall just short of the "greatest of all time" tier.
Diamond (90-100) - The best songs ever created.

Now, go wild and rate some music!
(Adding another disclaimer that this scale is just for fun)

And where would you rate Poly Styrene's hit with X-ray Spex "Up yours" :p Or "The return of the metal bozo clowns" by Lawnmower Deth  Or even "The day Marty Robbins died" by The Johnnys which was intended to be 'hokey' but is actually pretty good? It's kind of like "Watusi Rodeo" by the Pixies which I'm sure everybody has heard- NOT! And we won't discuss "Banana Phone" by Raffi as it causes some people's heads to explode...

Music is whatever it is to you; if you like it then it's great even if everyone else hates it.

Yep, simple as either liking a song or not liking it. That's all that actually matters. As Rick Beato put it, "If it's in my collection, it's gonna be five stars."

It's just fun to use the scale to 'rate' songs one feels is objectively awful. Such as "Freaxxx" by Brokencyde, "Cry Bhabie" by Alabama Barker and "Ms. Whitman" by Bhad Bhabie, all of which I gave the only score they deserved: 0/100!

Out of curiosity I checked out one of the songs you pointed out, namely "The Return Of The Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns". Best way I can describe it is that if you can make it through the nearly 2 and a half minute long painful intro, you're rewarded with a tasty track :p

I can't remember if I posted this before, but back in the pre-internet days there was a local music store with new and used tapes and CD's who had a policy of giving you a 50% store credit on returned music you discovered that you didn't like. They had many thousands of tapes and CD's to choose from arranged by genre, and I spent time almost every weekend poring over the titles in the kind of music I liked to see if I could find more bands I liked. Being that their prices were cheap I'd grab anything where the band name caught my attention as being unusual or interesting which is how I found most of the music I posted about. Some bands I found that way were a joy to discover but many served only to get me some store credit when I went back the next week. My practice led me to claim that I had the world's largest collection of bands you've never heard of on earth  In the process I now have some music which never made it to CD's and is long forgotten and obscure even today but well worth listening to. And in my eclectic collection you can fond Megadeth next to John Mayall next to Mozart net to Marty Robbins next to The Moody Blues next to Missing Persons, all of which there's songs I'd rate at the top which get listened to when I feel like listening.

I am amazed that you actually listened to and survived the intro to that song which is excruciatingly awful but very different, and yeah some good music follows afterward. And you gotta admit it's one heck of a name for a band ;)

It was a sad day when free-mp3-download.net shut down for good. Truly a fallen hero for music enjoyers worldwide.

But, I have some good news to report! A true successor is now up and running. Won't post the link here in case encouraging piracy is against the rules, but I will say the site uses the .su domain. It's easy to find with a quick bit of research, or PM me and I'll send you the link.

I owe this one to you, @Juliett Bravo Kilo...

I think I'm slowly starting to realize I was wrong about punk music... until very recently, all I was exposed to in that genre included crappy pop punk bands like The Clash, blink-182 and My Chemical Romance.

But since my tastes in music are wide and varied, I decided to dig a bit deeper into the genre... and that's when I started listening to some REAL punk bands like Poison Idea (once your profile picture) and Slapshot, and I have to say... their songs are absolute bangers!

And on a semi-related note, who else on this forum can have "Make America Hate Again", "Let It Go" from Frozen, and "Dynamite" by BTS all in the same playlist?

Got some songs right here that resonate with me, some because they hit me in the feels and resonate with me and a part of my life that I heard them, the song with you broke me first and never forget you have been staples in a certain season of my life. The oldies but goldies are just bangers.

Can't count how many times I've listened to you broke me first by Tate McCrae over the past year, probably a very unhealthy amount lol, but it truly hit a part of me that I really related too. (Also the Tate McCrae has a curse word so don't listen if you don't want to hear it , it's the only one with a curse word.)

This is a banger as well. One of my favorite songs (amazing vocals from this lady) blended into a trailer that randomly dropped that nobody was expecting back in the day lol.

Speaking of music, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville turns 100 in 2025. Now a lot of country music today is pop music with a twang. Even Beyoncé is doing country music now.
