I have put this thread up top during this time. If you live in an area that is covered by the severe weather threat today and tomorrow, and know of the shelters in that area, please add them here.

I am going to bump this thread. Remember if there is a possibility of a tornado in your area and you live in a Mobile or Manufactured home, please seek shelter elsewhere unless you have a storm shelter. Please stay safe and follow the guidelines that have been set forth during this time period with COVID - 19 Recommendations. If you know of storm shelters that are not on this list, please feel free to add them. Heavy rains like this weekend so a couple of hashtags for you. #turnarounddontdrown #stayweatheraware #alwx #hunwx #valleywx #tnwx #mswx #arwx #gawx #flwx If you know other important hashtags to be added let us know. Stay safe out there and keep an eye on the thread for this weekends storms.

I am going to add this statement from the National Weather Service and the Alabama Department of Public Health regarding going to a shelter amidst the COVID-19 pandemic:

The decision to seek shelter in a community storm shelter is certainly made more difficult by the consideration for COVID-19, and each individual will need to make an educated decision on where and when to shelter from a tornado.

At this time, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is recommending that your first priority should be to protect yourself from a potential tornado. If a warning is issued for your area, you are more likely to be affected by the tornado than the virus.

However, the decisions to open any community shelters are done at the local or county level. Before you make a decision to go to a community shelter, you should check with your community shelter managers to ensure they are open, and if there are any local COVID-19 considerations. Certainly, wherever you choose to shelter from a tornado, you should use as many precautions as possible to inhibit the spread of COVID-19 as best as you can. If you rely on public community shelters, now may be the time to explore other options that might keep you safer from severe weather and possibly limit your exposure to COVID-19.

The best way to prepare for this potential scenario is to keep up with the latest weather forecast as well as the latest recommendations regarding COVID-19 from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the ADPH, and local authorities.

I just made a Google Doc so we can compile all of this information in one place for quick access and so it can be circulated. Some of the linked shelters will need to be cross-checked to make sure they are still open during this COVID pandemic since some of the posts on FB say they were made years ago.

Link is here--it is under "anyone can edit" privs so everyone is free to add to it:

EDIT: some of the EM social media feeds/websites aren't updated as often, so it has gotten difficult to verify opens vs. closures. I'm trying my best to verify what I can.

One more update: Added most of what I could find on this thread, I highlighted outdated areas in the states that have been covered extensively so far (Alabama, Mississippi, some Tennessee).

Looking for more information to add to the list for these states in the Google Doc:
  • Arkansas
  • Florida panhandle
  • Georgia
  • Louisiana
  • more Tennessee not on the list
  • Arklatex region of Texas down to extreme east Louisiana border of Texas
If a threat begins to materialize on the East coast, we can start to add those states too. I think we can all agree we will want to prioritize the Easter weekend threat at this time.

Because information regarding open/closed shelters has been hard to come by, I want to ensure that the EMA phone number for each county is listed. Thanks for everyone's help in the thread.
