Hurricane Katrina 20 Years Later

Hard to believe that this month marks 20 years since Katrina hit the Louisiana/Mississippi Coast. It was one of the most deadliest hurricanes in American history, certainly in modern times. I have family in Laurel, Mississippi, well inland from the coast, that received significant damage and was without power for weeks. I thought I would create a thread for members to discuss the significance of this hurricane.

I recently watched the new documentary from Nat Geo, and I am ashamed of how much I didn't know. I was just starting my sophomore year in college and so we didn't really watch much news, and the internet was so different then, but I feel like I should have known more. I do highly recommend that documentary.

Netflix also has a documentary out about Katrina. Coming back to weather, I found the storm alert theme The Weather Channel used during Katrina on the Local on the 8s. That was some ominous music.

This upcoming Monday’s episode of Weatherbrains will be a 20th Anniversary Katrina special with the forecaster at NWS Slidell at the time who put out the now infamous doomsday text on the program.

Today, August 29th, is the official date Katrina made landfall. Since the national media almost completely ignored south Mississippi, here is a documentary WLOX-TV in Biloxi did about Katrina right after the storm.
