Heat lighting doesn't exist-what did we see?

Heat lighting doesn't exit. So, what phenomenon did we see that looks like lightning? There was no thunderstorms across the whole united states on radar. It wasn't fireworks either. I don't think it was the northern lights it would be more colorfully. I know this has happen at least 3 times in the last 30 years. Thank you in advance.
 
Probably cloud to cloud lightning in the tops of cumulus clouds.
