What is everyone drinking?

What's your go to beer?

We're fortunate in the Huntsville area to have several local companies brewing some excellent beers, and packaging them to sell in local stores. Rocket Republic, Straight to Ale, Yellowhammer and others can be found in almost any grocery store.

When looking for a craft beer I tend to lean towards Doppelbock's and Tripels, and over time discovered that when I find a beer I like its usually brewed in a Belgian style.

Tonight, I'm enjoying a Brother Joseph from Straight to Ale, a Belgian styled Dubbel. Good stuff.

As far as a go to beer, if Andygator is available and I don't see anything I want to try it is always a reliable option.

I'll also drink the more common mass-produced beers on occasion, usually a Corona or a Yuengling. I'll grab a Sam Adams draft if I'm out and it is available.

Mick Ultra if I'm thirsty or with food. I do like a Truck Stop Honey or Southern Pecan on occasion. And from my hometown brewery in Florence AL... Singing River Brewery, I'll quaff a Handy's Gold.

One thing I like about the craft folks is the clever names they come up with. In the link you posted, I love the name IPACalypse Now. I do see a couple I need to try, Orchestrator and Tiger Chainsaw Arms.

Nothing wrong with an Ultra. I like them myself.

I use to be quite picky about beers, but I guess the more I've tried the more I have acquired the taste of the different types of beer. Lately whenever I buy beer I try to buy something I've never had before, just to try something new. I also travel a good bit for work so it is nice to try the different craft brews in different cities.

An old faithful go to for me is probably a wheat beer (Blue Moon, etc.), but lately I've gotten into some IPAs (after hating them for years) that I've really enjoyed. Like the OP, I really enjoy Dubbels and Tripels as well, though they can be difficult to find.

You are correct about the Dubbels and Tripels being hard to find. Many local grocery stores has everything but those in their section, other than Andygator. The Brother Joseph I have been drinking I actually found at Sam's Club. There is a locally owned wine shop by my house that also sells craft beer and I can occasionally find stuff there I like.

I only began to like them after going to somebody's 50th birthday party last year, and the only beer they had available was a draft IPA. Slowly drank 3-4 of them throughout the evening and apparently that was what it took to somewhat acquire the taste. Ever since that night that initial bitter taste that can overwhelm you just hasn't bothered me.

I like Victory's Golden Monkey, that's probably the most readily available Tripel I see in stores here. Avondale in Bham has Miss Fancy's Tripel, which may be the best one I've had, but I rarely can find it in stores.

I'm primarily a whiskey man but I'm always up for drinking an IPA. I initially only drank wheat beers but I had a buddy recommend I grab a Stone Ruination IPA and check the difference. It was rather disgusting at first, very strong flavors, very bitter. I finished the large bottle and a couple days later tried again with another but couldn't make myself drink even half of it. Against what seemed rational I got a different IPA another couple days later and low and behold, it was instantly easy to drink and the flavor profile was remarkable. Not sure how it happens that the beer goes from overwhelming and gross to delicious and bearable so spontaneously. Been an IPA drinker since, even the dry hopped triples. And of course I love our local Huntsville brews, monkeynaut and to a lesser degree the gorillanaut. There's also several Georgia IPAs that are quite delicious.

I purchased a gift certificate to Below the Radar Brewhouse this morning - $25 for $50 worth of food/drink. I have been there once before and they have a great selection of craft beers, both local and from Birmingham, along with beers from other areas. What I really like is they offer samples. I was able to sample before purchasing, which is great. It is where I discovered Stout at the Devil from Straight to Ale. I liked it alright but as I mentioned above I love the names these breweries come up with and that was one of my favorites as an old Motley Crue fan.

We have something similar with Brass Tap in Midtown Village. They have about 70-80 taps. We had sampled at least a dozen between our group and I was getting a nice buzz from the samples.

I ended up ordering their Peach Bellini (yes I am a woman when it comes to drinks) and it did not disappoint.

It would be cool to get some of us HSV folk together at Straight to Ale some day for a couple beers. I'm not sure what time their "speakeasy" behind the false school locker wall opens.
I work weekends & Monday but I'm off every Friday.
