I remember at least several occasions where impressive-looking TDSs detected close to radar sites turned out to have been caused by relatively weak tornadoes. Someone ought to study how distance from radar sites affects the intensity of a TDS relative to the intensity of the source tornado.

Paducah from a couple weeks ago is a good example.

Yes. I’ve seen literal blobs with hardly no discernible hook produce high end EF3-high end EF4 damage.

Radar proximity also plays a role. I thought Amory was going to be wiped off the map on 2023 with an insane radar presentation. However, it was close to the radar, and while the tornado was an EF3, it wasn’t violent.

Yeah that's one of my most impressive signatures that I remember since I've been watching the weather.

Try this.

Dry slots are what creates the classic well defined hook of a supercell on radar.

A nice looking hook by itself doesn’t indicate at all the strength of a tornado, in fact, more often than not, you can have the best looking hook echo imaginable on radar but no tornado occurs.

that was because the winds did not translate, it was all above the town and is why it only had EF3 dmg

Story of 2025 continues...tornado-warned supercells again rolling through the horrendous radar hole of SE MO/NE AR; too far northeast for Little Rock, too far east for Springfield, too far south for St. Louis and not far enough east yet for Paducah and Memphis.
