I was really hoping it wouldn't end up here. Our public transportation system is held together with paper clips and chewing gum as is, not to mention the effect this will have on the already ridiculous housing costs in northern Virginia. We had been looking at moving down to northern Virginia since it's more convenient for both of our jobs than living in Maryland is, but that whole thing is throwing a wrench into the process.
That's one of the pitfalls of living near the capital.

On that note, the D.C one was made for one reason: political lobbying. Bezos already owns the Washington Post and putting this HQ there will allow him to conveniently have an army of workers to be a 20 minute drive away from Washington that he can use to pressure Capitol Hill to do what he wants.

I used to work in Alexandria and almost had to move there. The home prices were astronomical back in 2014, I can't imagine what they will look like now.

Not so fast, New York City!

After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens. For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.

I can’t really blame people for not wanting the richest dude in the world to get an enormous sweetheart tax deal to build in their city. Amazon kind of needs them more than they need Amazon.

Not really. The majority of New Yorkers supported the headquarters being built in NYC. Both democratic mayor and governor lobbied intensely. The fringe left chased them out with torches and pitchforks. Meanwhile, they’ll go to another big city, who will back up the Brinks truck with incentives and New York will lose out.

Idk. New York isn’t hurting for economic growth and they already have an affordable housing crisis as is, so I think they’ll get by okay. I wish Amazon would consider a deindustrialized city in the Midwest or south that actually is hurting for economic growth and isn’t facing housing issues. They would certainly stand to get more benefit from it than New York would in marginal terms at least.

SKYWARN® Volunteer,
I'm sure they will expand their footprint at the Nashville location as a result of pulling out NY.

Yeah, see, I think that would be great. A place where it's not going to contribute to existing housing/infrastructure problems (or not to the extent that it would in NYC at least). I'm not sympathetic to the NIMBY/anti-development argument against it but I understand some of where the opposition to the NYC HQ was coming from.

Nashville or Atlanta would be ideal in terms of proximity to North AL if they try to find another place. However my guess would be they just settle on Washington..
