This was along a strike-slip fault with mostly horizontal thrusting so a significant tsunami is unlikely.

I venture to guess a sunami along the gulf coast would be devestating and something no one is expecting or the least bit prepared for...

Just look at what Katrina did over a small stretch of the Gulf Coast. Storm surge, just like tsunami, is displacement of water due to some physical force...

Fortunately the risk is very low, barring another Chicxulub-type asteroid impact (in which case we have bigger problems).

My insurance company has me carrying flood insurance. I live in a 9th floor condo directly on the beach.

I read once that if the Chicxulub asteroid had hit in the deepest part of the Gulf instead of right by the coast, the tsunami would have been three miles high.
