A new tornado watch is coming.

Mesoscale Discussion 0085
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1115 PM CST Wed Feb 05 2020

Areas affected...southern and eastern Mississippi into western
Alabama

Concerning...Tornado Watch 24...

Valid 060515Z - 060715Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 24 continues.

SUMMARY...Storms have transitioned into supercells, and a new
tornado watch will be needed for the area.

DISCUSSION...Strong shear acting for a prolonged period on storms
along the cold front has resulted in a tornadic supercell, now over
Jasper county, MS. The environment ahead of this activity is
favorable for a continued tornado threat, with increasing low-level
shear into AL. In addition, boundary layer moisture continues to
increase, with PWAT values over 1.75" east of the cold front.
Finally, midlevel lapse rates are favorable for robust updrafts,
which may aid tornado, and possibly significant tornado threat.
Large-scale lift will only increase with time, and additional
supercells are possible both along and eventually ahead of the
front. As such, an additional tornado watch is likely.

I'm just wondering if the tornado threat will come this far north? We have had/are having a LOT of rain.

Interesting. The new tor watch (until 5am) does not include Bham or Tuscaloosa. Kind of surprised about Tuscaloosa being left out seeing the Meridian cell is training on a path towards it. Maybe the atmosphere is just too worked over. Other reasons, anyone? The movement of the line East?

My husband dodge a bullet (he wasn’t as fortunate last time in Laurel), he’s staying in Meridian but the tor went SE of him....

Major flooding across Tuscaloosa overnight. Reported over a dozen cars had water in them on The Strip (University Blvd) right off campus.

Other reports around town are roads closed due to high water.

Many people wrote off the later round of storms but it was apparent that another surge of instability was coming in overnight.

a couple long trackers yesterday. Had the precip shield over the gulf coast not messed things up, it could’ve easily been MUCH worse. We had a lot of supercellular structures.

One fly in the ointment today I’m seeing is some veered surface winds especially further down the boundary. That might inhibit some of the mesos from actually getting going. But, the speed shear (increasing wind speed with height) might compensate for that...

Admittedly had been paying a little less attention to the setup than usual because was busy packing for a trip, but definitely no slouch of an event. Late night Dixie debris sigs with 150mph G2G are no joke at all.
