Can someone please explain to me why everyone is making a big deal out of the numbers 6 and 7? To me, that’s just two field goals vs. a touchdown and extra point.

This isn't tooting my own horn; I don't know of any other source besides this 2023 post providing context to show why Japan's mobilization of troops against bears is necessary and not at all funny (And don't believe all the Japan bear footage you see online, unless it is verified -- some people are doing AI simulations.)

Is there anybody who is into HAM radio that I can talk to regarding a few technical aspects of the hobby? I just got my technician's license and ordered a transceiver; I'm still confused about how to make contacts and stuff like using repeater stations. The test doesn't really prepare you for those kind of things.

Oh cool. I wish I knew or knew someone.

OTD 4 years ago, the Queen died.

UPDATE: LMFAO MY BRAIN SUCKED money maker LAST NIGHT, she died on 9/8/22 not 4/9/22 WTF was I thinking? I saw something say "the Queen died 4 years ago today" - either that was a different Queen or that source was wrong as well. Or, more likely, I simply glossed over the relevant bits. Either way, oops.

Sticking this here, because I dunno where else to say it.

For those of us who have been using forums for way too long, there's a common saying: Don't feed the trolls. This means don't give them any attention whatsoever, even to tell them to stop. It's what they want. Forums have several useful features that make it possible to starve trolls of their desired attention. You can ignore the trolls, and you can report posts directly to the moderators, which in most forum software, notifies all moderators in a special way so they know there's something going on to look at. Make use of these tools rather than trying to call things out yourself, as doing so just escalates the situation further and gets just as annoying to read through as the initial troll posts. :)

Except that user's behavior has been reported multiple times, and the moderators have done absolutely nothing about it except ban longtime contributors who complain about how the forum is being run.

This site is completely cooked.

If that's the case, it still doesn't make it cool to feed the trolls. Again, just makes it more annoying (and more likely that the troll will keep engaging).

He says this stuff spontaneously - it's not like he's "engaging" with anything in the first place. The only way he'd stop is if the mods did literally anything about it.

I think people on this site are just sick and tired of the moderators not only failing to do their job, but being actively counterproductive.

If the trolls were suspended/banned and the moderators cleaned up a thread by deleting off-topic posts and calmly but firmly reiterating what the forum's rules are, then it would be fine.

But nope, instead it's only the people who call out the trolls and dare to criticize how the forum is being run that are having their posts deleted (or being banned entirely) while the actual trolls face no repercussions whatsoever.

It's not about whether or not 'the trolls are being fed' - it's about how the forum itself is being run, and it's been run very poorly lately.

@TH2002 you are welcome to leave if it really bothers you that much.

Or you could issue a public apology to @StormStalker because while you are over here kvetching about a troll not being moderated, he cleaned up the thread not long after it happened thanks to a user who reported the behavior. Which, of course, you could have easily done that as well instead of running here to complain.

Alright. I extend my apologies to @StormStalker. @MichelleH too. You both handled the situation very well, and I appreciate it.

I think my points about the forum's moderation have been made by now. I'm moving on from this.

My visits to this site have already been much less, and will continue to be going forward.

I can't speak for everyone but my philosophy is that many trolls can be rehabilitated in the right environment and it's up to everyone in the community to create that positive environment. Being heavy handed and perm banning people will send them deeper to the shadows and they'll no longer have a source of decorum and respect to learn better behavior.
Sure, some users are beyond that, would be way easy to just ban them and it wouldn't really matter much... but you never know which troll will turn around to be an awesome passionate person who benefits the community in the long run. It's best to be forgiving, warn the user (which happens privately) and have patience.
There's certain characteristics and actions that call for an immediate punishment, mute, ban, etc... and others that are character flaws that can be remedied with time and influence. It's a balancing act, it wont satisfy everyone. It would be very beneficial if users would ignore the annoying trolls and be the example of what we all want to see from others.

As many here know I'm a Ham operator of the "old school" type. One of the unwritten rules which once formed the core of Ham radio is to never do anything which reduces the pleasure of any other Ham. Better to turn your radio off than to make the whole community a lesser place through your actions.

The loss of that kind of spirit in the hobby is one of the reasons Ham radio has declined the way it has. Be the better person and then everyone will have more fun in the end including you.
Dah dah dididit dididit dah dah ;)
