Severe WX December 10 & 11, 2021 Severe Threat

Really interested to see their findings.

This is what you want to see, and should be the standard practice whenever construction quality isn't telling the whole story after a very high-end event. I hope NWS takes their findings into consideration.

I just have no words.....

If this is legit, its the first incident of foundation scouring since 4/27/2011 (Hackleburg-Phil Campbell and Smithville produced similar phenomenon).

Fox News is actually covering another city. They're showing a live shots from Dawson Springs and this looks like Smithville to me it's incredible destruction. I went through just about every picture of Smithville since it was my hometown and I can tell you this all looks like the same kind of destruction in Dawson Springs and Mayfield. Of course I'm not an expert.

I know one building many are taking a close look at is the UK Research building near Princeton, but when viewing aerials of the damage, it appears that at least one concrete slab foundation home was swept away nearby. It's the one visible on the left below. There was a much clearer angle on the ARCGIS map, and I wish I took a screen cap. Construction wise, this home may end up being one of the better EF5 candidates. Can't say for sure without close ups though.

With that said, I am not quite sold on the idea of the UK Research building being an EF5 candidate. I don't know if it truly meets the "total destruction of the building or a large section of the building" criteria. The closest it comes is the left annex of the building, and while not apparent here, the front wall and part of the left side wall are still standing. In addition, these types of one-story brick institution buildings, such as elementary schools, have a history of major structural issues, including a shocking lack of reinforcement and anchoring in many cases.

Hard to imagine how it would be possible to have any more complete destruction than that

This picture (which I have labeled as Dawson Springs) is just unbelievable. Everything in the path is just totally destroyed.
What's the source for this? That looks like an older image from Moore or Joplin.

Seeing a lot of 165s, which is the minimum possible allowed rating for slabbed homes. Automatic lowest bound allowed on the EF scale for most DIs it seems. That's probably a place to start before they're investigated more closely but I don't have faith most will be adjusted upward.

Update on Bowling Green.

Oh come on just bump it up to EF4 at this point. They’re just stretching the definition of EF3 damage beyond what it is meant to be applied to. Not been happy with NWS Louisville’s approach to surveying during this event. Does anyone remember how long it took for them to rate Henryville an EF4? I don’t remember this bs but it was a while ago.
