Yesterday was my 17th anniversary at Talkweather!
I’m always fascinated by the numbers game when mentioning my TW anniversary. Some of our (and other states) NWS Mets and media Mets were just teens, when I joined. My daughter was 14, I’d just turned 35 and had been married to her Daddy for 15 yrs. We’d just gotten back together after a 5 month separation and we’d moved to Clay Co and our nearest neighbor was a friendly bootlegger (he delivered on his 4-wheeler), I was homeschooling my daughter and was a bit lonely out there!! It was the anniversary of the ‘74 Outbreak and I misunderstood and thought the ‘73 Brent tornado and ‘74 were at the same time not remembering they were separate years. I’d been on ABC 33/40’s blog when the Outbreak was discussed and John Oldshue mentioned TW forum. I immediately joined under my initials and the year I graduated highschool.
Wow, have times changed. I’m remarried, Laura is married with 3 lovely children (I love being a Memaw!).
As for TW changes, the ownership changed hands three times, each owner being great, sadly some members have passed away (JB Elliot, Perry Williams and Jason Echols) others have gotten married, had children or life statuses have changed. I’ve been through (with y’all) the first anniversary of 9/11, 3 Presidents, war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the demise of Hussein and Bin Laden, Katrina, Tsunami of 2004, various outbreaks, including the historic thread and event of April 2011, Joplin 2011, Moore 2013 and El Reno 2013, school shootings, mass shootings and I could go on. It’s almost like we’ve been in the battle of life together. So many of you have become dear, lifelong friends, a good many are like family. I’ve gained priceless knowledge about weather and that took my fear away!
I’m so glad this forum was here 17 years ago, after growing up and having lived in Alabama during the ‘73 Outbreak (that hit in my town), ‘74 Outbreak, I grew terrified and fascinated by severe weather and was interested in “all things weather”. My Daddy and grandmothers were interested as well but there weren’t any kids my age interested and thought I was strange due to my interest.
Then at TW I found hundreds like-minded people full of information and research and I was drawn in immediately.
I hope if you haven’t joined but lurk, that you’ll decide to join and become a part of the Talkweather family, this is a family-friendly place full of knowledge and fascinating details of weather, science, news and life!
God bless you all!!
