Special commemoration for Hurricane Katrina, as I know anniversaries usually go into the tornado and hurricane thread.
On this day 21 years ago, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana as a 110-kt (125 mph) Category 3 hurricane, with some people suggesting that Katrina may have been a 115-kt (130 mph) Category 4 hurricane at landfall. Regardless, it brought unprecedented destruction to Louisiana and redefined what we think about destruction and loss of life from tropical cyclones.
In the Spring of 2006, Katrina was retired and it was replaced with Katia, which was first used for Category 4 Hurricane Katia in 2011, which recurved out to sea unlike Katrina.
