To further dwell on my comment, imagine the steps you'd need to do to shelter correctly in that situation:

You would first need to get yourself completely awoken, while you would assume adrenaline would do that, most people just don't understand the threat of a high end tornado.

Then you would need to find an actual structure to hide in that is sturdy, which further decreases survivability significantly as most people don't know where structures like that are. Storm shelters are also probably rare in that specific region assuming soil is similar to how it is down south.

Because of all this surviving a tornado in these circumstances seems basically almost impossible IMO.

All that plus tornadoes period are rare deep in the Kentucky mountains.

I won't talk about the whole politics crap too much (because it sucks and nobody gets along), but I will say that the NWS Jackson office was fully staffed last night. That wasn't a problem this time around.

(This isn’t a political post) my only real criticism with Jackson was not necessarily non-issuance of the TOR-E, but just how long it took them to put it in the observed category. There was plenty of evidence that it was on the ground heading to Somerset and lofting debris up with an accompanying CC drop. I just really chalk it up to NWS Jackson being extremely inexperienced with these events.

UPDATE: Got in contact with my cousin this morning. She and her friends are safe, but some of the damage pics she sent me are really bad. Assuming the buildings affected are well-built,. I wouldn't be surprised if the St. Louis tornado gets an official upgrade to at least 160 mph.

Great footage but incredibly stupid move to just drive into the tornado.

Minor tornado went right through Baltimore last night, in addition to another minor one in Atlantic County, Noo Joyzee.

Tornado moved through Baltimore and Dundalk, National Weather Service says

Not really. That’s a wooden subfloor, and other angles of this specific house show a small cluster of intact walls near the right perimeter when facing from the street.

What I really think might give this thing the EF4 rating is the tree damage and contextuals, like the ground scouring (although I doubt they'll factor it in). Due to general construction quality in southeast Kentucky I don't think structural damage is what's going to do it.
