Assuming the stars align for a 4th playoff spot up for grabs, Alabama’s on the outside looking in. Hope is still there though. From Clay Travis.....”Ohio State against FBS teams with winning records this year is 3-2. With a. 31 point loss to a 7-5 team. And a 15 point home loss. Bama is 3-1 against same criteria with the loss at Auburn. Again, look at total resumes top to bottom Bama’s is better.”

Unfortunately nothing I saw yesterday would lead me to think we have a shot if granted the spot. We had no identity as a team. What problems plagued us last season on offense seemed to have been magnified this game with little rectification. We just didn’t have one of the best defenses in college football history to bail us out this year. Daboll doesn’t seem to be the fix. Significant issues at O-line and D-line as well.

I think it falls more on Hurts than Daboll. Hurts just doesn't have what it takes to be a championship QB. He's a great guy and has the mentality, but he doesn't have the physical tools nor the patience. I think we need to open the QB competition back up as we head into the offseason and see if Tua can take control. He has a much higher ceiling.

Agreed. I think Tua is the better QB and it should show in the off season. Unfortunately Daboll doesn’t run a scheme to Hurts’s strength. And that atrocity of play calls where our best RB had 6 friggin carries. 6! He went full Sarkisian.

Wish we could poach Mizzou’s OC...

Greg Schiano will not be the next head coach at Tennessee.
They reportedly had already signed the deal and are now attempting to back out. Schiano is reportedly seeking the terms for breach of contract. What a mess at good ole Rock Top.

I didn't think anybody could top the incompetence of Joe Alleva. This might....

I've got to disagree with you on this. Dabol is trying to coach Bama like they are New England. IMO he runs the plays he's scripted for the game and can't or won't make necessary adjustments. It works ok when we clearly out man the Def but when the def talent is close to or equal our off talent, he seems to panic and go in a brain coma. Did not play to the strengths of Bama's personnel yesterday. Trys those slow developing downfield passes that require our WRs to get separation on Aubs DBs which they did a poor job of. 75% of the time Hurts has about 1.5 sec to throw then he is forced to make a quick decision because the OL has broke down and he has DL breathing down his neck. Hurts is coached to NOT throw into coverage (even though he did a couple of times yesterday). Think back on how Saban coached McElroy, McCarron, and Coker... the same. Wants a game manager who will minimize mistakes rather than a gunslinger who takes chances. How many quick slants did we see yesterday or screens to the backs? I remember one to Harris that got 12 yds and another that got 7 or 8 and the only slant I remember was to Foster who ran 1 yd short of the sticks then took a step back toward the LOS instead of driving upfield and cost us a TO on downs. I'm not saying Hurts played a great game at all. His delay of game killed a drive and stepping ou of bounds for a 7 yd loss instead of throwing it away was not excuseable, but I think his play was good enough to win if Dabol had the right play and personnel in. (Why did Dabol have Bo in at the critical series where his disruption and clapping with the OL caused Bozeman to snap early when Hurts was looking at the defense.) Bama's RBs were averaging nearly 7 yds/carry. Even if you throw in Hurt's 17 runs for 80 yds.. the YPC is still 5.8. Yet.. Bama's 3 stud RBs got a combined number of carries that was about half the total that Johnson did for Aub (18 vs 30). Think about the opening drive of the 2nd half and how we plowed down the field running the ball. Ever since Kiffin was told to find another job, our offense against decent defenses have struggled (Washington.. Kiffin was there but his mind was at FAU)... Sark's disaster in the championship, and Dabol's fail against Auburn. Last year from the first game to the 12th you saw Hurts progress as a QB under Kiffin and was awarded SEC POY. I have seen not further progression from him this year. You swap Chip Lindsey for Dabol, you swap the scores in the game and you have us in the SECCG with a good chance of running the table.

Ohio State University making an appearance in the CFP would all but confirm that every game doesn't matter to the committee. And what is that BS of "acknowledging injuries?" Clemson gets a pass but Bama doesn't? That opens a whole Pandora's box...

I would like to go back to the BCS computers, to remove the significant human element. I do think the Power 5 conferences should remove the cupcake non-power 5 conference games, add an extra conference game and eventually go to an 8 playoff system.

I have two top 4's.

If I was on the committee

1. Oklahoma
2. Clemson
3. Auburn
4. Wisconsin

The way it should be (totally contradicting myself)

1. Wisconsin
2. Alabama
3. Georgia
4. Oklahoma

In most other sports, records matter. If records truly mattered in CFB, Wisconsin is #1. After them, you rank the 1 loss teams since that would be the easiest tiebreaker with such a large field. Alabama and Georgia have the best loss(hate that term), but Alabama was at least competitive so I rank them ahead of Georgia. No other 1 loss team has a best loss against a ranked team, but Iowa State is just outside the top 25 so Oklahoma grabs the 4th spot.

No, Central Florida's record doesn't count. This is a P5 discussion only.

And the fact we are talking about a "best loss" and looking at 2 loss teams just shows how absurd this playoff is and how bad of an idea expanding to 8 teams really is.

The BCS got it right in most years(2004 it might have been wrong but there were 3 undefeated teams and the SEC had been down at that time).

While the bolded part is somewhat true, what matters more than records is winning your division/conference. Records matter for wildcard/at-large positions in the playoffs. So, if you're basing your approach off of "most other sports", how can you put in a wildcard selection without putting in the division champion that was ahead of them?

divisional records are tiebreakers, but playoff spots are determined by overall record.

Unless you are talking about a 2nd place team from division A being ahead of division B champion. In that instance, that's really the only playoff expansion I'd support, adding just one spot. 5 P5 conference champs, no wildcards. Rank them however and have 5 play at 4 to determine the semi finals.

So, the key is that, in the other sports, a conference/division winner won't be excluded from the post-season while someone that finishes below them is included. Should Auburn win the SEC, you're "the way it should be" final 4 violates that. Now, if you want to alter the conference championships to accommodate overall records (thus putting Alabama in the SEC championship instead of Auburn), that's fine - but you'll see nothing but cupcake games out of conference from then on.

Joe Moorehead to MSU. He's the mastermind behind Penn State's explosive offense and Saquan Barkley so that's an excellent hire for them to pick up where they left off with Mullen.

And playoff spots are NOT determined by overall record. That was proven last night when the committee put Auburn at 2. And the whole "Well Ohio State got in last year at 11-1" argument.. it's honestly moot and a VERY lazy argument when applying that to Alabama this year. Here's why..

Ohio State didn't get dominated on both sides of the ball against Penn State like Alabama did against Auburn. Ohio State was the BETTER TEAM on the field, and they lost on a blocked field goal where the ball took a one in a million bounce right into a Penn State player's hands with nothing but green grass ahead of him. Penn State's offense was stagnant the vast majority of the game, and even so much as a simple block with Penn State getting the ball back likely wouldn't have won the game for them.

Alabama, on the other hand, was CONTROLLED by Auburn. We looked lost. We looked clueless. We looked like we should've lost by about the same score Georgia did and not just 12. We had a LOT of breaks go our way and we failed to capitalize. (Auburn having 12 men on the field on 4th down before Robert Foster travels 1.5 yards upfield on a 4th and 3. The botched field goal snap after we lucked into an incompletion with Jalen Hurts trying to chuck the ball across his body into traffic. The 2 epic fails by Bradley Bozeman). Frankly, based on how we've played ever since the bye week, if the playoffs started today and we were one of the teams, it would look like Michigan State from 2015 except we'd be on the receiving end of it.

TCU and Ohio State both had AWFUL losses (Something Auburn didn't have) and are 2 loss teams, and neither team has had a truly convincing win. Penn State (Ohio State's best win) still can't beat elite teams, and Ohio State almost lost to a Michigan team who had a waterboy playing QB. TCU in general has just looked above average all year, and they looked better in September and October than they do in November.

Sorry, a 31 point loss to a 7-5 Iowa squad should elimate Ohio State. It’s a flat out sham if they get in. There is NO logical argument for putting them in.

Championship worthy teams just don’t get blown out.

To say Alabama would suffer a 30+ point defeat is a bit ludicrous. Even when we played like absolute trash against Auburn, we held them to a 12 point victory. When has Saban ever been on a receiving end of 14+ point loss at Alabama?

Auburn had a lot of great breaks on special teams...a unit that was close to last in the country. 3 punts inside the 10. That was a game of field position and Auburn has some fluke bounces on punts.

Its worked for Wisconsin so far. Beat tOSU and they're in.
