Sad to hear, but there is a trend in all things to go satellite or cellular only as terrestrial radio and broadcasting is slowly dying :(
Canada doesn't have the level of very dangerous short-fuse evens we do so I think we're safe for awhile but it can happen here too and probably will eventually.
Here at my home I have only one cell tower in range which also provides my internet, so my primary warning connection is actually WX radio.

Life-saving weather alerts that operate independently of the internet and its infrastructure? Nah, too useful.

I'd bet money the idiots who thought this was a good idea haven't spent more than 24 hours without an internet connection in their entire lives.

They're basically saying "screw anyone who lives in a rural area with a slow or unreliable internet connection and spotty cell service, let's tell them to download the datamining smartphone app too".

May all of the people who discontinued Weatheradio, and all those who thought doing so was a good idea, have their routers self destruct and their smartphones get hacked and pumped with viruses, then realize why radio communication still has a place in the modern day and age.
