I think for a majority of folks, its the response on how to handle it that is political. Then you have a select powerful few who use it to either make money or gain control.

And there are those on the other side who have cooked the books and misrepresented data to further their agenda. That's why it is a political issue, because both play politics with it. Not too mention, that side is as bad at ignoring hard data that doesn't support their claims as those are on the right. It is like every other issue facing us today - we can't have honest discussions.
