Earthquake still being assessed - Magnitude downgrade​

  • 1. Follow the "long OR strong, get gone" guidance above
  • 2. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates, and NZCivilDefence X and Facebook
  • 3. Listen to local Civil Defence authorities
  • 4. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers, and estuaries, this includes boats)
  • 5. Stay off beaches and shore areas
  • 6. Do not go sightseeing
  • 7. Share this information with family, neighbours, and friends
We will provide an update as soon as the initial assessment has been completed. Updates will be published on our website www.civildefence.govt.nz and X @NZCivilDefence.

GeoNet's followup article. There was a small tsunami. It's a good in-depth look at a little known part of this region.

They don't address questions about focal mechanism that some experts I follow raised, other than saying that they aren't sure whether the quake occurred within the subducting plate or on the fault between the two plates.

Who knows? Maybe Earth wasn't sure, either! :)
