Hybrid tornado really need their own thread

Hybrid tornadoes are now potentially official now (as seen with the damage tool site)

they work differently from normal supercell tornadoes or pure landspout

most of them come out of nowheres it seems because there requirment paramaters are different then pure landspout and supercell tornadoes.

here is a graph of the 2 types of hybrids and the common conditions they need.

Surprised you didn't mention how violent many of the historical hybrid tornadoes are. Of the ones listed, 3 were rated F5 (and one of those 3 is the consensus pick for "strongest tornado of all time"), one had recorded windspeeds over 300 MPH, and at least one other (Hawley) seemed to be a lot stronger than officially rated IIRC. Wallfleet I'm not sure about.

Matador 2023 might have also been a hybrid tornado, or at least had landspout orgins according to Convective Chronicles' video. If that's the case then that one, too, was exceptionally violent and was actually stronger than Jarrell and Smithville IMO. I only have 3 tornadoes on my list that are higher than that one.

matador is a interesting one for if its a hybrid or not , but one thing is for sure i find it to be very similar to Moore 2013 , and that brings up a other question... is Moore a possible hybrid base on the early damage?

i remember a survey map info about Moore that has me curious , i cant post the full thing as its going to complain the file is too big but here is a smaller closer zoom in of the part I'm talking about

How can you tell what looks hybrid @joshoctober16 ?
like in atmospheric or just by looks?

if you mean by looks.

Classic Supercell Tornado

  • Cloud Base: low to mid in height , low wall cloud tends to form first with a horseshoe base
  • Movement: moves north / north east / east , has a average movement above 25 MPH , path isn't too wired but might do a sharp left turn at the end of its life.
  • Life: tends to last 5 minutes to 3 hours
  • Appearance Shape: can be any shape , from cone , rope , wedge , multi vortex and so on ... tends to not look like a landspout however.
  • Appearance Texture: can have multiple texture , from messy to smooth.
  • Supercell: tends to be Classic to HP , can be on a boundary sometimes
  • Location: south and east side of USA along with the central part
  • Time: march to June , also November , can be both day time and night time
  • Death: when it starts to die it dies quickly.

Hybrid

  • Cloud Base: Mid to High in height , tends to form in a flat base with usually no horseshoe in shape , however mid way in its life it gets its horseshoe shape base with a low wall cloud.
  • Movement: Moves south ish , has a average movement less then 25 mph , path looks super drunk and cant seem to decide where it wants to go
  • Life: tends to last 20 minutes to 1 hour
  • Appearance Shape: can be multiple shapes however tends to be a stovepipe / Cone / Rope , with some landspout ish look most of the time. It tends to also be the tornado type that can be perfectly straight.
  • Appearance Texture: tends to be very very smooth , sometimes looks a bit too "FAKE" in its appearance , edges tend to be very very sharp.
  • Supercell: Tends to be LP to Classic , has to be on a boundary almost all the time.
  • Location: north and west side of USA along with the central part
  • Time: May to August , only during day time (sun is out)
  • Death: when it starts to die it seems to die very slowly ... sometimes reappearing and re starts again without ever lifting.
