Severe Weather 2026

Local news station here in South Bend IN did a story of the "record breaking" severe weather season around here and if this is signs Tornado Alley is trending eastward. Evan Bentley from SPC and one of the IWX NWS meteorologists are both included briefly.

TLDW: 24 Tornado Warnings were issued in March and April specifically around Northern Indiana, shattering the old record of 14, and the average only being two. If this same pattern happens next year, then the meteorologists around here will start to get worried.

Something also mentioned is the growing concern of severe weather fatigue.

I'm starting to wonder if the urban heat island effect is particularly strong this year in Central Ohio; there's a noticeable but very small gap of wind reports right over the metro and multiple warnings around but not in it. We are made up of mostly parking lots so it would make sense.

Boo. Data centers…

Got 1.70 inches this morning according to Tempest. That's probably skewed though.

Good morning all. This thread has gotten quite large. One of the things we are trying to do is not just talk about weather but also be a research tool. We can go back and look at weather patterns and events that took place in the past. one of the ways we do that is be separting the events into weather days. Specifically when we have severe weather days. If you all want to discuss general things about the weather patterns for 2026 here, that is good, but we would love it if you would use the individal events. There really should have been a thread started for May-20-22 Severe weather. So lets do that. Considering today will probably be very busy, lets go ahead and do that. I will be glad to move the pertinent posts over to it when it is created.
