Hurricane & Tornado Anniversaries

April 26 is a big one.

OTD 35 years ago, unbelievably: 1991 Andover etc outbreak.

15 years ago: The "day before the day" of the 2011 Super Outbreak, which some model forecasts had earlier indicated would be the more dangerous day between the 26th-27th. Despite being a high risk, it had the least overall impact of the three-day sequence but still produced 55 tornadoes including an EF2 with a 42-mile track from Texas into Louisiana. However the most notable effect from that afternoon/evening's activity was probably serving as the origin of what became the 4/27 MS/AL morning QLCS.

2 years ago: NE-IA outbreak, one of the higher-end outbreaks of recent years despite only having an Enhanced risk/10% hatched. I chased this day but misplayed it and ended up forever playing catch-up, only getting distant glimpses of the first Afton, IA area EF2.

You mentioned everything I wanted to mention. Goddamn you. (/s)

Also on 4/26: Chernobyl's 40th Birthday!

This afternoon, April 27, 2011, A date which will live in infamy, a vast majority of the Deep South, particularly in the states of Mississippi and Alabama, was suddenly and brutally attacked by a swarm of over 200 tornadoes, which killed nearly 325 people and caused inconceivable damage in places such as Smithville, Philadelphia, and Rainsville.

Today I get to bring up one from my part of the country.
On april 28th, 2002, a supercell thunderstorm tracked all the way to southern Maryland and dropped a violent, long tracked F4 tornado that went through the town of La Plata.

Ah yes, the tornado which seemingly broke the surveying and ratings process for all time (How well the "Enderlin precedent" sticks remains to be seen).

Also 4/28/14 (Tupelo and Louisville, MS, discussion of the latter seems to come up relatively rarely on here for a 185-MPH EF4 with 10 fatalities).
Tupelo was heavily forgotten. I myself literally forgot this tornado until you mentioned it. 4/28/14 could’ve been a LOT worse and it was still a horrible event.

Kinda surprised nobody brought it up due to how Alabama-infested this place is (I'm half-joking lol) but May 3 was also the anniversary of the 1984 Montgomery F3 that killed 5, including four on the section of the Northern Bypass where it intersects US 231. There's a very haunting photo of a damaged car where one of the victims perished on Newspapers.com. Apparently the tornado pulled the pants of a truck driver off while leaving him unharmed? I don't even want to ask.

And do Ohioans have a tendency to be against Alabamians (I'm also half-joking lol, but maybe a sports rivalry? Maybe someone can fill me in, I don't know sports)
Definitely a bit of a college football rivalry (Roll Tide is one of the best in the south, OSU is historically one of the best in the north). I myself am quite fond of Alabama; one of my favorite states after Tennessee and California. It's just very noticeable how many people here are from Alabama lol.

As an OSU diehard, we strongly dislike Alabama, but believe me, nothing comes close to the disdain in our hearts for that team up north. The week we play them every year is such a fun experience.

This state sucks. Take it from someone who's lived here for all 23 years of my lile.

OK, maybe that's a bit simplistic... Outside of the cities, California really is a beautiful state, and a great place to visit. But actually living here? Different story entirely.

Anyhow, sorry for going off topic. I really have mulled over creating a 'Which State is the Best/Worst Debate Thread' sans politics, on this site before.
