2026 Drought Discussion

SC just went to a statewide burn ban because of the drought. Can't remember statewide ever before, with everything from oceanside to mountains there's always some rain somewhere.

Slight chance of a shower tomorrow but any real rain is still a week away.

we're finally getting some rain in the DC area for the first time in about two weeks. hopefully this will wash away some of the pollen and I'll be able to breathe again.

Smoke from the wildfires in southern Georgia, which have been greatly exacerbated by the major drought, has carried up into the northern half of the state. I can actually smell it inside my house as I'm typing this - it's impressive how pervasive it is. My sinuses are really loving it, first the pollen and now the smoke.

Dang that’s rough. Sorry. I hate that. Canadian wildfire smoke seems to come down here every summer and it sucks. Allergic to pollen also.

Yes, it's very hazy and smoky out. The building I work in (downtown ATL) had to send a message to all the tenants explaining it was wildfire smoke from the southern counties and not anything wrong with the building.

It’s looking like north Alabama will get not as much rain as forecast tonight with the MCS going further south than forecasted. I sure hope we see rain next week. Parts of northeast Alabama are starting to get into the Level 4 drought category.

Not funny

This just happened with us, too! We managed to thread the needle between two pop-up storms on either side of us. We got a few sprinkles but that was it.

Got some showers yesterday :) Total maybe1/2"
Still thankful and glad to get it as it will make the forest floor debris a lot less flammable for awhile

Got some rumbles of thunder around 6am and a small line came through around 8:30 with some pretty good rain. Nice to hear thunder and rain on the roof again. Of course it’s going to make my commute miserable, but I’ll take any rain we can get at this point!

Had a ton of thunder and lightning around 2-3AM here but only 0.25" of rain. We're at 1.75" for the week (!) hoping to pick up maybe another 1" overnight Fri/Sat. Hoping for some improvement in next week's update - GA now has the highest level of extreme drought in all of the Southeast.

There's been a good amount of rain over the last couple of weeks across the South, but taking a look at the drought monitor, we're still very much in the red. Severe Drought has actually expanded significantly across North Georgia. With the drought lasting as long as it has, it could really negatively impact farmers in Middle Georgia and the Coastal Plain. With the fragile infrastructure down there, it can also impact general availability of water for some communities.
