drove on 280 out of birmingham, it's a total mess from mountain brook to the summit. took 2 hours to go 12 miles. also, dolly ridge road looked bad. would be surprised if it was only straight line winds there. well built homes sustained damage.

Confirmed 5th fatality in Alabama. Man in Vestavia Hills was killed by a falling limb as workers were cutting through downed trees in his front yard. Sad.

Just got back from a structure fire..we were called out right when the storm hit at about 10 45 this morning..
70/80 mph winds were rocking the fire engine like a toy car..we couldnt even make to the structure because of all the trees blown over the roads. Luckily, another dept came in from the north side and knocked it out....

National weather service in helicopter as we speak surveying 280 damage. There is no way that was just straight line wind damage

Yeah and I got 459 headed towards 20 and you can clearly see a defined path where the storm came across the interstate

Exerpt from afternoon BMX HWO: ...TORNADO OUTBREAK LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR THE COUNTIES SERVED BY THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN BIRMINGHAM.

.DAY ONE...THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

A SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK IS LIKELY TODAY FOR ALL OF CENTRAL
ALABAMA. STRONG...LONG LIVED TORNADOES...DAMAGING WINDS...AND
VERY LARGE HAIL ARE ALL POSSIBLE. TORNADIC SUPERCELLS ARE EXPECTED
TO BEGIN DEVELOPING ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI-ALABAMA STATE LINE BETWEEN
2 AND 3 PM...AND THIS THREAT WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT EASTWARD THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS...POTENTIALLY REACHING THE INTERSTATE
65 CORRIDOR BETWEEN 4 AND 6 PM. CURRENT THINKING IS A LINE OF SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP LATE THIS EVENING AND TRAVERSE THE
EASTERN HALF OF THE BIRMINGHAM COUNTY WARNING AREA...EXITING INTO
GEORGIA BY 6 AM...AFFECTIVELY ENDING THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR
CENTRAL ALABAMA.

THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS SCENARIO FOR ANYONE IN
CENTRAL ALABAMA. NOW IS THE TIME TO REVIEW YOUR SEVERE WEATHER
ACTION PLAN AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE QUICK ACTION WHEN WATCHES AND
WARNINGS ARE EVENTUALLY ISSUED.

Will those storms hold together as they move into NW Alabama or will they begin to weaken some? Its rather cool here at the moment 59/58.

I only thought hail that size occurred in places like Nebraska and Kansas!

You thought the probabilities in the MS tornado watch were high...EVERY parameter is pegged at >95% in the new PDS watch for AL.

Line of storms firing between just east of Tupelo down to just east of Jackson, MS will need to be watched closely - the southernmost blew up in a hurry and is rotating already.
