I completely agree that both parties are guilty of playing identity politics. But, this didn't start with Obama. The legacy of identity politics goes back many decades. George Wallace. Nixon's "Southern Strategy." And it existed before that time period as well.

Obama certainly did contribute to the climate of racial mistrust, and he very clearly made public mistakes like the Henry Gates incident and "bitter clingers" (which, ironically, he was right about). And, yes, he normalized or was reticent to condemn identity based groups like BLM.

But, he also broke with those groups on quite a few occasions, and I don't believe he stoked or appeased the extreme radical fringe like Trump has done.

History has nuance, and birthers existed long before BLM or other groups came about. As stated, identity politics existed long before Obama, but he certainly didn't end them and at times inflamed and exacerbated the tensions surrounding race and the politics of race.

I just don't believe that Trump and Obama can be compared on this issue. For a number of reasons that would take way too long to lay out. I don't think you disagree with that.

With that said, irrespective of the media worship of Obama, I think most of us can agree that even though Obama contributed to simmering racial tensions, Trump has poured gasoline all over a pyre and is walking around flicking lit matches nearly every day.

I have a bit of a biased perspective because the groups Trump is whitewashing want my wife and children to either be expelled from the country or cremated in an oven. And I never felt Obama glorified groups that wanted to do anything similar to white people like me.

I've always been a bit of a raging optimist when it comes to life and society, but Trump has tapped an ugly vein in the heart of America that both angers and saddens me. And, it's actually frightening when you consider that what some of these groups want for my family isn't an exaggeration -- it's what they literally believe.

So, Obama doesn't deserve a free pass and did contribute to today's climate, but what Trump is doing is infinitely worse in my view. He's made these groups feel safe to preach and spread their hate, and he's emboldened others that are disaffected members of society or harbored latent racist beliefs. The entire specter of identity politics needs to be destroyed for the good of the country.

I don't disagree, but my overview of Obama's Presidency is harsher than yours. And I know that identity politics have been going on for decades, but it reached a crescendo under Obama and the entire Democrat party during his reign. My point for bringing it up was because I was seeing how the left was strutting around with their tail feathers in the air clutching their pearls like they had nothing to do with this racially charged environment. Nothing at all. And it's absurd. People have such short memories. Having said that, once again Trump makes everything worse by opening his mouth. I know I'm late about commenting on his latest presser but I think everyone knows how I feel about this train wreck at this point.

I was in a social media discussion today about the events at Charlottesville and how the Nazi flag and Confederate flag has through time become very synergistic and a woman told me that all of the demonstrators shouting racist slurs and carrying out violence in the name of hate, were actually paid actors who really didn't know what they were doing. There was a guy who agreed with her and that rich liberals had set this all up to make Trump and confederate sympathizers look bad.

Haha. There probably were a few paid people there on both sides. But man....

Well, I'll give Trump credit for living up to one of his campaign promises - at the rate that people are resigning and boards/councils are being disbanded, the swamp will be empty pretty soon.

That's Charlotte, NC. Not Charlottesville, VA. So what does it have to do with anything??? That's 5 hours away from where the protest happened.

Evan, they transport these nut jobs all over the place. We have gone years without these statues and memorials not being a big deal, Why now ? This is an orchestrated plot by Soros, Obama and others to foment racial strife and drive a wedge in this country. And they are succeeding.

Nope, it was actual Nazis. I knew of these specific guys and groups long ago and have watched them on Social Media since 2015. They worked hard to help get Trump elected.

You are making a logically identical argument to the "Don Jr was setup" arguments. You are claiming that people actively assisted in getting Trump elected because they had a plot to undermine him once he was elected. It make zero sense. Why not just discourage Trump voters or publish fake news about him? This is underwear gnome logic.

1. Get Trump elected by promoting and strengthening the far right even though you are a leftist.
2.!?!?!?!?
3. Remove Trump from office after uniting the far right instead of working to prevent his election.

It doesn't make any sense. But, more importantly, if true, why can't you provide a single shred of evidence except from fake news sites?
