The White House announced the creation of a new Office of American Innovation to be led by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The office is meant to bring in outside expertise with the mission of overhauling the federal government. An executive memo explains that the new office “shall gather information, ideas, and experiences from other parts of Government, from the private sector, and from other thought leaders and experts” to “improve Government operations and services, improve the quality of life for Americans now and in the future, and spur job creation.”

Making further use of the Congressional Review Act, President Trump signed four pieces of legislation nullifying four Obama era regulations. The first bill nullifies a rule requiring federal contractors to report labor law violations. The second bill nullifies an Interior Department rule consolidating federal control of the millions of acres overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. The third and fourth bills nullify Department of Education rules, one which offered federal guidelines on how states and school districts should measure achievement and another which updated requirements for assessing teacher training programs.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions addressed the daily White House press briefing, warning that sanctuary cities risked losing federal grant money from the Department of Justice. He did not comment on other sources of federal funding that could be withheld.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee forced a one week delay on the committee’s vote to approve the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch. The committee vote is now scheduled to be held on April 3rd.
