Due to the fact of talking about Derechos I figured we could discuss this. In terms of Derechos, we know big ones such as the "Great Inland Hurricane", but I don't think the one that occurred early 4/27 is talked about enough. Not only did it create strong wind damage across the whole state, but it produced two strong EF3 tornadoes that were almost EF4 along with others.

It is the only Derechos to my knowledge that would have fulfilled requirements for High Risk in tornadoes. It also preceeded the worst tornado outbreak in the past 50 years. In truth was it ever classified as a derecho?

Any other thoughts?

I've always been mesmerized by the Derecho that hit Florida during the Blizzard of 1993. That has to be the farthest south a Derecho has traveled in the United States. A few hours after that Derecho hit, nor'easter like conditions hit the Big Bend region of Florida. The warm sector of the Blizzard of 1993 does not get mentioned much.

Yeah that Derecho streched all the way down to Cuba. Insanity.

Yeah that definitely would be one for the history books. Another derecho that stands out to me is the April 4, 2011 derecho just in terms of its raw strength, apparently gusting to 132 mph.

I have to say though, one of the most fascinating of all would have to be the August 8, 2010 derecho in Estonia - a derecho that far north is not something many people were expecting.

I've done a fair bit of digging and from what I've been able to find here are the highest wind speeds ever recorded in derechos:

Most of these are well inside the Category 3 to Category 4 range on the Saffir-Simpson scale, and the severity of the wind damage aligns with the scale almost exactly, as well as with the fairly well with the Enhanced Fujita scale...what interests me is that we only begin to see inconsistencies between wind estimates on scales and the actual recorded winds in derechos, tornadoes, hurricanes etc. towards the higher end of the scales.
